Nestled at the base of the Palmer Divide of the Rocky Mountains, sits a quaint, historic town called Palmer Lake. Stating the obvious, the town is home to a lake that sits in downtown where visitors and locals can fish, picnic, kayak, paddleboard, enjoy the walking trail around the lake, and to allow the kiddos to play on the playground or spike a few volleyballs on the sand court.
Palmer Lake, Colorado also has a few iconic pubs and restaurants that people from The Springs, Air Force Base, and Monument come to enjoy on a daily basis as well. O’Malley’s Irish Pub draws in an array of people and travelers from Highway 105 and if you have been on this road, you will understand the appeal of taking it. Not only does O’Malley’s have friendly faces, they have some of the best chicken wings I have ever tasted along with their homemade Buffalo sauce that you can buy in a jar to take home with you! Palmer Lake also has a great ice shop called The Rockhouse, where families can enjoy homemade ice cream with a view of Palmer lake. And there is The Speedtrap for breakfast and lunch, offering delicious crepes and fresh organic salads. Don’t forget to check out the art galleries and local historic homes placed all around downtown.
If you’re feeling up for some exercise with a beautiful view, try the Palmer Lake #2 hike! Bring your water and hiking shoes because this hike is uphill the entire way to the reservoir that provides water to the town. Once you reach Palmer Lake #2, you will immediately know, the burn in your legs was worth it! Keep in mind that this is one of the few hikes you cannot bring your furry friends on as the water must stay clean and fresh for residents. You can fish it but the town is very adamant about no swimming or dogs in the lake. Just North of Palmer Lake, you can find plenty of hiking trails and open spaces for your dogs. Once specifically that I enjoy taking Ranger to is Spruce Mountain Open Space where you can hike an entire mesa with incredible views! The difficulty is moderate and there are a few trails you can take but best of all, it is mostly shaded so you don’t have to worry about that 7K foot sun burning your shoulders.
Palmer Lake, Colorado is a hidden gem with friendly people, good grub and beer, and you can’t beat the views of the red mountains and the famous Elephant Rock!
